This particular aircraft had a production serial number of 27309 and a line number of 546. It was one of several Boeing 767s that Shanghai Airlines operated over the years.
Shanghai Airlines was founded in 1985 as China’s first joint-stock airline, with the aim of providing domestic air services within China. It was founded by the regional government of Shanghai district, but was only able to operate flights from 1988 onwards. The airline grew rapidly in the following years and became a major player in the Chinese aviation industry. It expanded its network to include international destinations, such as Tokyo, Seoul, and Bangkok. She is a subsidiary of China Eastern and thus a member of the SkyTeam aviation alliance.

In March 2018, the aircraft was then withdrawn from use and stored at Shanghai Pudong International Airport from June to July of the same year. In August 2018, the B-2563 was finally ferried to Marana Regional Airport in Arizona, where it was placed in long-term storage.
