Hekla Aurora: The Northern Lights Live On
For more than a decade, Hekla Aurora carried Iceland’s Northern Lights around the world. Now the unmistakable Boeing 757 lives on as an official Aviationtag edition. Its original aircraft skin has been transformed into limited collectibles featuring an extraordinary variety of colors, transitions, and combinations. From deep midnight blue to green, turquoise, and the Icelandic winter landscape, each Aviationtag reflects a different part of the famous livery.
Hekla Aurora was a Boeing 757-200 registered as TF-FIU. It made its first flight on April 8, 1994, before being delivered to Iberia on July 29 of the same year. After further chapters in its career, it joined the Icelandair Group in 2004 and subsequently became a familiar part of the airline’s fleet.
In late 2014, the aircraft received its extraordinary special livery as part of the #MyStopover campaign. A team of specialist artists recreated the Northern Lights across the fuselage using elaborate airbrushing techniques, with an Icelandic winter landscape painted below. Shades of green, turquoise, blue, and deep midnight flowed into one another. Inside the cabin, specially programmed LED lighting brought the aurora experience on board. Its name also tells an Icelandic story: Hekla is both a traditional Icelandic girl’s name and the name of a well-known volcano, while Aurora refers to the Northern Lights.
Shades of green, turquoise, blue and deep night-time hues blended seamlessly into one another. A specially programmed LED lighting system even brought the aurora into the passenger cabin. Its name, too, evokes Iceland: Hekla is a traditional Icelandic girl’s name and also the name of a well-known volcano, whilst ‘Aurora’ refers to the Northern Lights.
Aviationtag X Icelandair
On October 12, 2025, Icelandair bid farewell to Hekla Aurora with a special sightseeing flight from Reykjavík over Iceland. Around 140 passengers were on board, including aviation enthusiasts who had travelled from abroad especially for the occasion. The route passed coastlines, mountains, glaciers, and some of the landscapes the aircraft’s livery had carried around the world for more than a decade. After landing, the Boeing 757 was welcomed back with a water salute.

In an official collaboration with Icelandair , Aviationtag is preserving a part of this extraordinary aircraft. In July 2026, our team personally recovered sections of the original outer skin in Lleida, Spain, in temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius.
