Over 150 aircraft have been transformed into genuine pieces of aviation history
Before genuine aircraft material becomes an Aviationtag, it has usually spent many years in active service – flying short- and long-haul routes, carrying passengers or cargo, or completing military missions. The original material comes from retired aircraft around the world that are prepared for their next chapter at aircraft boneyards and specialised airports. Selected sections of fuselage skin and other suitable components are then transported to the Aviationtag workshop in Cologne. There, they are inspected, documented, cut, punched, polished and laser-engraved.
Every Aviationtag carries the key details of its origin: aircraft type, registration, individual serial number and limited-edition size. Official collaborations also feature the respective partner’s logo. The result is a keychain, luggage tag or collectible made from genuine aircraft skin with traceable provenance. Paint marks, scratches and layers of colour were acquired during the aircraft’s years of service and make every piece unique.
Since 2016, Aviationtag has continuously refined the process of aircraft upcycling. It began with a Piper PA-28. Today, the range extends from small single-engine aircraft to the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. A Lockheed C-130 Hercules, a Bölkow Bo 105 helicopter and several fighter jets have also been transformed into limited Aviationtag editions. Different alloys, paint systems and composite materials require new solutions for every aircraft – from selecting and processing the material to documenting its origin.
Aviationtag’s tenth anniversary coincides with another milestone: its 150th regular retail edition. Numerous additional special editions and exclusive projects for airlines and other partners are not included in this count.
Long-standing collaborations with Lufthansa, Etihad Airways, Air Canada, DHL Express, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines have helped shape the brand, alongside exceptional projects such as Ed Force One. The Boeing 747-400 that carried Iron Maiden and their touring crew around the world in 2016 now lives on through an Aviationtag edition developed with the band.
Today, Aviationtags are carried on keys and luggage or displayed by pilots, crew members, engineers, frequent travellers and aviation enthusiasts worldwide. Each one is an individually numbered piece of aviation history with documented provenance – crafted in Cologne and backed by experience dating back to 2016.
